The casket (No. 560 in the Wallace collection) is a very fine specimen of seventeenth-century German work. The panels are inlaid with with cornucopiæ, dolphins, scrolls, fruit and flowers... ...in the centre of one side is the date and maker's name: “Fait en Massevaux par Jean Conrad Tornier monteur d'harquebisses L'en 1630”. We thus connect this kind of work with that of a no doubt celebrated decorator of arquebusses (firearms).
