Ivory triptych of The Rye House Plot trial
An extremely finely carved large ivory polychrome triptych depicting the trial of William Lord Russell at the Old Bailey in 1683, for complicity in the Rye-House plot. The triptych encased in a glazed wooden frame, which must have helped in the preservation of the original colouring.
French, Dieppe circa 1870.
The frame has a brass plate engraved
"TRIAL OF WILLIAM LORD RUSSELL AT THE OLD BAILEY IN 1683, FOR COMPLICITY IN THE RYE-HOUSE PLOT."

The Rye House Plot of 1683 was a plan to assassinate King Charles II of England and his brother (and heir to the throne) James, Duke of York.... the Whig leaders Lord William Russell, a son of the Earl of Bedford, was convicted and executed, and Algernon Sidney was convicted on weaker evidence by Judge Sir George Jeffreys,
